Google updates Google Reader app for Android
Google knows that it is important to keep its software updated often enough in order to maintain its popularity as well as appeal to the masses, and this time around it is the Google Reader app for Android that has received such a treatment. After listening to its users, Google has decided to throw in several popular requests including an unread count widget and news ticker widget for folks who are rocking to Android 2.2 Froyo and above, while ‘Mark Previous As Read’ will be retroactively included – which means even if your dinosaur of a smartphone is lugging along to Android 1.6, it will still work. Folks who work with the KGB (or just love Russian feeds) will be pleased to know that Russian translation is supported on an official basis now. Acer Windows Phone 7 devices arriving later this year
The folks over at Pocket-lint managed to get confirmation from an Acer spokesperson about the Taiwanese company hopping on the Windows Phone 7 bandwagon. Apparently Acer has got some WP7 handsets planned for a September or October launch. The launch of the handsets will coincide with the launch of Windows Phone 7.5 (codenamed Mango) which will basically put them head to head against the Nokia WP7 phones released around the same time ( if speculations turn out to be true). Windows Phone 7 might not have kicked off with an impressive launch, but it seems that Microsoft is slowly ramping up the necessary support needed to turn their mobile operating system into a potent competitor for the throne. It’s about time they push out their first major WP7 update though. Acer Windows Phone 7 devices arriving later this year , By Ubergizmo . Motorola unveils full specifications sheet for its XOOM tablets
Motorola’s XOOM tablet is set to light the world up when it hits the market, although its price point might just not garner the kind of sales figures that Motorola executives are looking for. Motorola has also decided to unleash the full specifications of its XOOM tablet to the masses, where you can choose from a Wi-Fi only model or the 3G one. Of course, the only difference would be spending two Benjamins more for the high end model as well as a radio chip inside. Which model would you choose, and will the iPad be the tablet of your choice in the long run instead? Motorola unveils full specifications sheet for its XOOM tablets , By Ubergizmo . Amazon retails HTC Inspire 4G for $60
The HTC Inspire 4G has been…inspiring, to say the least, and it is one Android smartphone that does bring above average specifications home. Well, while the handset might not have access to AT&T’s HSPA+ network in most areas, it is still a speedy model, where it retails for $60 from Amazon – which is a good $40 off if you decide to get it from AT&T instead. Strange to see such a major price drop on a high end handset a mere three days after its official release, so we could be looking at HTC and AT&T attempting to boost its sales in the short term. iPhone mini could boost Apple’s smartphone revenue by 2.5x
The recent iPhone mini/nano rumors have gotten tongues wagging again and now a Bernstein Research analyst thinks that such a phone could see huge benefits for Apple. According to the analyst, a cheaper version of Apple’s iPhone could boost its addressable market by 6x in terms of units, and 2.5x in terms of revenue. Apple’s iPhone is already a pretty dominant phone at the high-end smartphone scene, but it will definitely be something to keep an eye on if Apple offers a low-priced iPhone in order to compete with the mid-range devices. Would such a move have all the mid-range devices cowering in fear? One thing is for sure; consumers would definitely be smiling at the arrival of such a device. iPhone mini could boost Apple’s smartphone revenue by 2.5x , By Ubergizmo . DoCoMo demonstrates interactive ‘touchable’ 3D display
[MWC 2011] DoCoMo, the Japanese carrier, has showcased an interactive 3D display at Mobile World Congress. The display is dubbed the Touchable 3D Display and allows you to interact with the 3D objects served by the display. Users will need to interact with it via a pen that has its position tracked by two cameras within the system. The system is smart enough to send a signal to the pen, causing it to vibrate, offering a form of force feedback. The demonstration of this glasses-less 3D display offered a cartoon chameleon that tries to catch your pen with his tongue, and if he manages to, the pen will vibrate strongly. There isn’t any mention of when the carrier will offer this technology to the masses, but we hope that it’ll arrive sooner rather than later. Could exploding phones be in vogue again? Following earlier reports of a Motorola Droid 2 allegedly blowing up , now someone out there claims that an iPhone 4 blew up too. According to reports , the user noticed that the phone became extremely hot while his wife was holding it, while the battery of the phone had swollen, dislodging the back panel and catching fire. Intel ad hints of a black MacBook?
Could Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro notebooks be available in a black color scheme? While there isn’t any official confirmation of such a move, Intel’s latest advert promoting its 2 nd generation of Intel Core processors depicts a black notebook that looks very similar to Apple’s MacBook. Apple had offered the earlier versions of its MacBook in black, so it’s not like the company hasn’t done that before. Of course, let’s not forget that this is just an ad and there isn’t any proof of such a move, but with Apple expected to refresh its MacBook Pro line soon, you can bet that this ad will set tongues wagging. Let’s not forget that Intel has sparked similar speculations in the past too. Intel ad hints of a black MacBook? , By Ubergizmo . Extreme Reality brings touchless controls to phones
[MWC] Back when cell phones were created, I’m pretty nobody ever imagined we’d have touchscreens for displays. Well now it’s the year 2011, technology has really progressed and touchscreens aren’t mythical anymore. What’s the next step then? Touchless controls for your smartphone. At the Mobile World Congress this week, a company named Extreme Reality promised to have handsets with touchless gesture interfaces on phones later this year. If you can imagine using the Kinect, but on a phone instead – you get the idea of how it works. Users can rotate their fists to zoom in or out an image, and other gestures to flip through a photo gallery. Why would we need such technology, you may ask? Well, this method of input means users won’t have to deal with buttons – very practical for controlling a phone while in a car, users won’t have to hunt and peck for the call answer or reject call button – they can just wave their hands to answer or cancel a call instead. A very interesting technology, we’ll be keeping an eye out for. Let’s see what sort of gestures and functions manufacturers will implement in their phones. Philips to turn your iPhones and iPads into digital audio recorders
Philips has just announced that they will be releasing a recording app for the iPhone and iPad. All users need to do is run the app and they’ll have a fully functional wireless digital dictation recorder that works seamlessly with their SpeechExec Enterprise suite. Through the app, users can record, edit and send dictation files directly from their mobile devices. The app can automatically upload recorded files to the internet and distribute the files to transcriptionists (or to whomever that needs the audio files) to save time and increase productivity. The app will include features that allow fast file edits, an express mode where users can simply shake their iPhone/iPad to start or stop recording, automatic file encryption to ensure your file is safe, and priority settings so that the app knows which recordings should be processed first. Imagine all the instant-concert bootlegs we’ll be having as soon as a concert is over, using this technology. Philips Recorder for iPhone will be available on the iTunes App Store later this month. Sony S1 Android tablet on the way?
While many manufacturers out there are busy coming up with tablet devices, one company still hasn’t provided a tablet device for us, and that is Sony. Now whispers are going around that Sony is planning to come up with a 9.4-inch tablet device, codenamed the S1. This Android-powered tablet is being led by the VAIO organization, but it might be launched as a Sony product without the VAIO branding. Sony will be including some of its popular custom transitions and UI elements and the tablet is focused on Qriocity, Sony’s music, games, ebooks and videos on demand service that was recently launched in Europe. The tablet will apparently be preloaded with PS One games, a Brava Media Remote and PlayStation integration of some sort. More… Sony S1 Android tablet on the way? , By Ubergizmo .
